New Exhibit: DERRY and the GREAT WAR

A look at the displays in the special DERRY and the GREAT WAR exhibit at the Derry Museum of History premiering Dec. 9, 2018.

The exhibit:

• Illustrates the experience of the town of Derry in World War I, 1917–18, through a display of military artifacts, contemporary posters, photographs, postcards, music, newspaper accounts and other publications, scrapbooks, and photo albums.

• Shows glimpses of the 300 Derry soldiers and sailors at training camps like Camp Devens and on the battlefields of France, and recognizes the ultimate sacrifice of the 15 Derry men and women who died in service.

• Presents the challenges and contributions of women and others on the home front, and highlights the contributions of Pinkerton Academy to the war effort.

• Concludes the story in the postwar period, discussing the formation of veterans organizations, the erection of the World War I monument and of Veterans Memorial Hall, the outbreak of the Spanish Influenza epidemic, and the bicentennial celebration of the 1719 founding of Nutfield.
